, michelle obama with a surprise appearance at the oscars. if you fell asleep, you missed it. was it bigger than blockbuster or just a bomb. >> plus, let's go "outfront." >>> and we begin tonight with new developments. cnn has just learned that governor chris christie, a key 2016 republican presidential hopeful, is not invited to the conservative political action conference in washington, d.c. next week. that's according to a source close to c-pac, and c-pack, if you haven't heard of it, is often considered a must-attend for anybody who wants to win the white house from the gop. senator marco rubio of florida, louisiana governor bobby jindal, former florida governor jeb bush, rand paul of kentucky, rick perry of texas, they're all already on the list. is this a snub for chris christie? this news breaking late this afternoon. how big of a snub is it the. >> it makes a lot of sense for cpac, because frankly, chris christie was not going to show up this year, so why bother asking him and then get snubbed by the governor himself? just do the snubbing yourself and say we don't want you here. it

burton and co-founders of pry arteries usa, a pro-obama super pack. community activists in chicago have been pleading for years for the president to come home and directly address gun violence. he's gotten a lot of criticism about his lack of talking on this issue. why has it taken him so long? >> i think the president has talked about these issues for a long time and sometimes the president addresses issues and the it's not in a big speech like he did today. but the president has been there on these issues and right now is a particular moment in american history where we can address gun violence, take commonsense measures that 90% of americans support, like universal background checks, and make a big difference on this issue. there's a lot of guns on the streets right in and out but there are some things government can do and the president is trying to push that as fast as he can to make sure that we're getting some of those guns off the street and out of the hands of people who shouldn't have pem. >> better late than never? he has talked about it but he hasn't been in chicago since no

that are going to take effect, and while we may be short on time, we are not short on blame. president obama for one was busy today with no less than eight local television interviews. the president, according to the white house, telling his side of the story directly to the american people, blaming republicans in this interview with wcvb boston. >> the way this arose was back in 2011, the republicans were threatening to default on the full faith and credit of the united states. and we had to avoid that. the hope was that they would use this year and a half to come up with a sensible deficit reduction package. now, we've reduced $2.5 trillion on our deficit. we've got about $1.5 trillion more to go. there's a better way to do it than this, but the key is for them to go ahead and put forward the balanced, responsible approach that will avoid these cuts. >> he wants them to put forth the approach. john boehner, meanwhile with, is the them, sort of. he made his case directly to the people too, today, blaming the president and he wrote in a "wall street journal" op-ed, mr. president, we agree th

and barack obama, right before the election. and i know, by the way, today, mitt romney just gave money to chris christie's gubernatorial campaign. so mitt doesn't seem to be holding a grudge. but a lot of people were really upset about that, thought it was influential in the election. uh i'm just wondering if this was a part of it. the paul ryan voting for $600 billion in tax increases seems to be a way bigger violation than a $60 billion spending bill. >> well, i can't make any comments on a decision that an organization made. i mean, they invited me, they didn't invite chris, they have the reasons, you heard them. my feeling is, you know, the republican party, the great thing about the republican party, it's unlike the democratic party. there is a fair amount of diversity in our party. you guys on cnn, as well as other networks, spend a lot of time talking about the divisions in the republican party. and then you try to -- you make the claim, well, you know, the democratic party is a more inclusive party. well, wait a minute, there is no division of the democratic party. you don't ta

candidates, mitt romney and president obama, talked about during the last campaign. they're all still out there. we haven't touched any of those. >> well, just to be fair, mitt romney said he would lower the tax rate in exchange for closing those, and you did limit deductions as part of the federal -- part of the fiscal cliff deal. so let me ask you about that specifically, because this whole tax issue, adam davidson and i quote him every single night so i hope he listens, co-founder of npr's planet money noted in the "new york times" that increasing the middle class tax burden by an additional 8% would have a bigger impact than taxing millionaires at 100% and of course, congressman, leaders of your own party, bill clinton also knows this. here's bill clinton at a conference i was at with him a year ago. >> i think you could tax me at 100% and you wouldn't balance the budget. we all have to contribute to this. if middle class people's wages were going up again and we had some growth in the economy, i don't think they would object to going back to the tax rates that i obtained when i was p

to the forced spending cuts to take effect in eight days. president obama made some talk radio appearances. >> whether or not we can move republicans at this point to do the right thing is what we're still trying to gauge. >> now, he's called the cuts severe and brutal. house speaker john boehner, guess what, completely agrees with that. he's called them deep and dangerous, but they're not doing anything about it. here's the thing about the cuts. they're going to hurt some people that nobody wants to hurt. people already in pain, more than 4 million homebound and disabled seniors may have to go without dinner this year because of cuts to meals on wheels programs in the forced cuts. 70,000 children from lower income families will not be able to enroll in preschools and day care centers because of the forced spending cuts. the owners of about 10,000 homes and small businesses destroyed by hurricane sandy won't get the money needed for repair and recovery. now, there are all kinds of things in the forced cuts, some of which you may agree with, but some of which all of us would find offensive.
